Day One: Paddle, Picnic, Play
Start your trip with a splash — literally. Hire a canoe from Symonds Yat or Ross-on-Wye and drift down the River Wye at family-friendly pace. Most local hire companies offer half-day options, and the scenery is something out of a storybook: kingfishers darting, herons gliding, and cliffs towering above.
Top tip: book a guided canoe trip if you’re a first-timer; the guides keep it safe, fun, and stress-free. Try to keep dogs in check - if you can!
After paddling, set up a picnic on the riverbank. Local delis and farm shops (try Bailey’s in Ross or The Pantry at Monmouth) pack baskets full of Wye Valley treats. Let the kids skim stones while grown-ups enjoy the view.
The afternoon calls for a wander at Puzzlewood — the magical woodland that inspired Tolkien and Star Wars filmmakers alike. Winding paths, mossy bridges, and gnarled tree roots make it a playground for imaginations. It’s accessible enough for all ages, but adventurous enough for the teens to put their phones away (at least for a while).
Round off the day with a relaxed dinner back at your group accommodation. The big houses of the Wye Valley are ideal for families: huge kitchens for shared cooking, gardens for games, and lounges for board-game battles after the kids crash.
Day Two: Castles & Stories
No trip to the Wye Valley is complete without castles. Start at Goodrich Castle, a dramatic medieval ruin with views that stretch for miles. Kids love the dungeons and battlements, while history buffs can dive into tales of sieges and knights.
Next, head to Monmouth for lunch and a gentle explore. The town is famous as the birthplace of Henry V, and its high street has plenty of cafés and independent shops to keep everyone busy.
In the afternoon, Tintern Abbey awaits. Its soaring Gothic arches are breathtaking, and there’s something magical about wandering among the ruins with the river flowing nearby. Parents can soak up the atmosphere while kids run through the cloisters pretending to be knights and princesses.
Evening plans? Treat the family to a pub dinner. The Anchor Inn at Tintern or The Saracens Head at Symonds Yat both welcome muddy boots and excitable children.
Day Three: Cider & Celebration
Day three is all about apples — the heart of Herefordshire’s countryside. Cider tours are surprisingly family-friendly, with orchards to explore, apple pressing to watch, and (of course) tastings for the adults. Try Westons Cider Mill, where the little ones can enjoy apple juice and tractor rides while you discover the craft behind the perfect pint.
If your crew has more energy to burn, finish the trip with a climb up Symonds Yat Rock. The walk isn’t long, but the views of the looping river valley are jaw-dropping. Bring binoculars to spot peregrine falcons soaring over the cliffs.
Back at your holiday home, gather the whole gang for one last feast. Big houses in the valley often come with long dining tables, perfect for laughter, toasts, and maybe a cheeky cider or two. It’s the kind of evening that cements family memories for years.
